It seems that Amazon has an increased interest in cryptocurrencies. Amazon is a suitable candidate for this, as one of the largest, richest and most influential companies in the world. There seem to be no concrete plans yet, but a vacancy has been posted for an expert in the field of digital currencies and blockchain.
Cryptocurrency at Amazon
Whether Amazon wants to start a cryptocurrency itself, or whether it just wants to investigate whether it wants to accept crypto as a valid means of payment, is unknown. BusinessInsider noted in the job posting that Amazon is looking for an experienced leader to develop Amazon’s digital currency and blockchain strategy and its product roadmap.
“You are leveraging your domain expertise in Blockchain, Distributed Ledger, Central Bank Digital Currencies and Cryptocurrency to demonstrate capabilities to be developed. In addition, you ensure that these stimulate the general vision and product strategy and you make an effort to acquire investments for new capabilities.”
Bitcoin as a means of payment
An important role, therefore, although it remains unclear what exactly Amazon wants to do with it. The spokesperson is also not very clear: “Amazon is inspired by the innovation that is taking place in the field of crypto and is looking at what this could look like on Amazon.” As a means of payment, as your own crypto? It is still unclear. Moreover, Amazon does have some clever minds in this area, because Amazon Web Services already has a blockchain service.
On the other hand, it is logical that large companies want to see what the possibilities are with cryptocurrency and it is wise to do that step by step. After all, you don’t want to announce, like Elon Musk, that Teslas can be bought with Bitcoin and put a huge amount of money in that digital currency, only to indicate a few weeks later that that was not entirely wise and that it will be reversed.
The sustainability issue
For example, a company such as Apple also posted a vacancy some time ago for a business development manager in the field of alternative payment methods. However, it is questionable whether it will get very far: cryptocurrencies are not the most sustainable coins. That’s also the reason Tesla stopped doing it.
Certainly a company like Apple that considers sustainability to be of paramount importance, will therefore have to dig deep to find a more sustainable way. Perhaps that ultimately also applies to Amazon, which with its many parcel deliveries is often looking for more environmentally friendly delivery methods. It will probably also look at sustainability, if only to comply with government regulations. Undoubtedly to be continued.
