TikTok breaks the limit of three billion downloads

The fact that TikTok is immensely popular needs little explanation. According to the calculations of SensorTower, the social media platform has broken the barrier of 3 billion app downloads this year. This would make TikTok the first app that does not eat from the Facebook rack that has achieved this milestone, counting from January 2014.

Incidentally, the market researchers have not only added up the downloads of the Apple and Android versions of the TikTok app in their calculations, but also those of the Chinese version, Douyin. Anyway, with these figures TikTok is now in the list of apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, the so-called ‘club of three billion’.

Number of downloads is falling

Exorbitant numbers, that’s for sure. However, it is not all hosanna in that area. Compared to a year ago, in the first half of 2020, the number of downloads of the TikTok app decreased by more than 40 percent, from 619 to 383 million.

It should be noted that the popularity of TikTok in the first half of 2020, measured by the number of downloads of the app, shot to an all-time high. In the six-monthly figures before and after, the average number of downloads has fluctuated between 330 and 390 million.

Consumer spending breaks the 2.5 billion mark

Since this year, users have been spending more and more money on and within TikTok. After a sharp increase in the first and second quarter of 2020, quarterly sales stabilized at around $380 million. In the last, second, quarter of this year (2021) that turnover shot up sharply again, to 535 million dollars.

TikTok has reached another milestone with this. Along with Tinder, Netflix, YouTube and Tencent Video, TikTok is now one of the apps that have generated more than 2.5 billion in “consumer spending” since January 2014.
